Best of the Burghosphere – Green Grandma

It’s National Blog Post Month and several of us who can be characterized as “Pittsburgh Bloggers” have joined forces to participate in something called the Best of the Burghosphere.  This is an opportunity for us to celebrate the variety of blogs we have that are based in, or relate to, Pittsburgh and expose our readers to other personalities.  We were assigned another blog to review and then we were to determine an appropriate award category for that blogger.

I’ll be honest.  I was hoping to be assigned a blogger who writes fairly simple, straightforward posts that fall into one, or maybe two, categories.  That did not happen.  I was asked to review the blog Green Grandma.  Now, I typically blog about, writing, running, or policing.  She does none of that.  The posts are written by Hana Haatainen Caye who describes the blog as a place “…where old fashioned ways combine with 21st century common sense. Articles are often geared toward young parents as they wade through the myriad of choices as they try to live greener and healthier lives. Green companies, places and products are often featured and occasional guest bloggers share their expertise.”

Whatever.

I like the following description better.  I hereby declare Hana Haatainen Caye (a.k.a. Green Grandma) the:

Blogger Most Likely to Keep You From Poisoning Yourself While She Simultaneously Gives You Birthing Tips

I hope nobody else in the Burghosphere event invented that category when determining awards.  I’d hate for there to be a duplicate.

The variety you find on Green Grandma is incredible.  If you want to know if the tap water in your area is safe to drink – you can find out.  If you want to know 1,098,423,408 ways to use vinegar – those are here.  What’s that?  You want to read about the experiences other have had while giving birth?  Yep.  She’s got that too.

Hana does a great job of keeping the content fresh and there is something for everyone.  I actually met her once at an author event (because, of course, she writes and narrates books too) and her personality comes across in the blog.  And that’s a good thing.  Really!

Congrats to Hana and her blog Green Grandma on receiving this notoriety.  While it goes without saying she will remember this as the greatest accomplishment of her life, I’m sure Hana has much more planned for us in the future.  Be sure to check out Green Grandma.

Also, check out the other great blogs that were part of this “competition”.  Maybe Steel City Intrigue is in there somewhere.  This list is here.

So, 30 Authors Walk Into This Blogger Bar and…

This week, in place of one of my usual blog posts I’m helping announce the kickoff of the second annual #30Authors event.  Ever wonder what some of your favorite authors are reading?  Sure you have.  Here is your chance to get to know some fantastic writers as well as some amazing book bloggers.  Last year’s event was a huge success and even resulted in a published anthology titled Legacy.  Allison at The Book Wheel created the event and describes it as follows:

#30Authors takes place annually during the month of September and has been met with incredible support and success in the literary community. In the six months following its inaugural event, the concept was published as an anthology (Legacy: An Anthology) and has remained active on social media. Authors who contributed in the first year include Celeste Ng (Amazon Editor’s Pick), Cynthia Bond (Oprah Book Club Pick 2.0), and Rene Denfeld (Powell’s Books Top 5 Books of the Year).

And scroll to the bottom of this page and enter to win an amazing prize pack of books – including one of mine.

So, check out this event.  Yours truly is seventh out of the 30, so you’ll want to see which book I chose to review.  Last year I reviewed the anthology FaceOff but this year I went with a more traditional novel.  Spoiler alert: It involves the death of a beloved childhood character… kind of.  But, not really.  Stay tuned to find out.

NEW RELEASE – Legacy: An Anthology

Friday, April 17th is the official release date for a book that is the result of a brilliant concept involving multiple book bloggers and authors.  It all started with something called the 30 Authors project that brought together several (yes, you guessed it… thirty) authors who reviewed some of their favorite books through a fantastic team of book bloggers.  My review of the anthology Face Off was posted by Read-at-Home Mama, who later interviewed me about the 30 Authors event, and more.  At the conclusion of this event, a publisher called Velvet Morning Press came up with the idea to get some of the authors from various genres together to create an anthology.  In the end, fourteen of us contributed stories to Legacy.

Not only is Legacy a wonderful collection, but the proceeds go to charity through the organization Paws for Reading.  This is truly a unique set of stories from a diverse group of authors, focusing on the theme of “legacy” and putting their own spin on the subject.  The 30 Authors event was coordinated by Allison at The Book Wheel, so be sure to check out her page.

I am honored that my story Four Days Forever (set in Pittsburgh, PA) is included in Legacy.  The international list of contributors includes writers who have had works listed on the New York Times bestseller lists, won prestigious awards, and have cranked out Amazon bestsellers.

Check out this book!  I can assure you that you will not be disappointed by this impressive anthology.
